Realms of Ashana

Realms of Ashana is not an 'RPG'. It's a deeply interactive, physics- and skill-based medieval fantasy adventure game, similar in vision and scope to Golden Sun, and gratefully picking choice elements from The Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy 6.

Gameplay Features / 'Blurb' / 'USPs'

  • Removal of “artificial restrictions” (gameplay cop-outs): Combat is not an interface state, but an occurrence. There is no invisible rule that stops you wielding weapons in town.
  • Laws: Intelligent crime and punishment system, with local magistrates and law lists for you to check before you travel. Some countries are more liberal than others, but all will arrest you for murder… if they catch you or find evidence.
  • Thievery: In all computer RPGs, the player habitually steals everything that counts as an item, even if it belongs to an NPC. In Realms of Ashana this is recognised as a gameplay mechanic, such that NPCs won't just blithely ignore the flagrant theft of everything. You must become adept at avoiding jail, and high value items may be stolen from high security palaces in thrilling cat-burglar robbery scenarios.
  • Symmetric spell system: every skill in the book commands a useful response from the magical world of the game, yet equally applies to progress and combat mechanics. The spell sets are intuitive and symmetric, in that status weaknesses are variable, even reversible, and every spell has an opposite, enabling a unique counter-spellcasting defensive system in combat, as well as the warding and anti-magic abilities that reign in magic to well-defined boundaries.
  • Material-based Physics: a beautifully simple damage system against a vast variety of physics-savvy monsters leads to endless experimentation in the most efficient methods of dispatching foes in combat!
  • Well-written, original fantasy story: Which isn't hard, given the poor standards of CRPG writing today, but nonetheless, Realms of Ashana gives the player some unusual moral angles, toys with the definitions of anti-heroism, and jabs a spear firmly in the eye of that ridiculously over-worn theme, "plucky party of incorruptible do-gooders versus world-consuming manifestation of pure evil."
  • Magical Superfights: A character system that combines arcade elements with a scaleable level-up system surpassing Dragonball Z, and a map-damage system that allows magic spells to blow entire mountains away, and where wizards' channelling abilities let them move and fight at super speed on the land, in the air, or between dimensions!
  • Unique, Never-Before-Seen Dungeon-Generation Algorithm: A custom system for the random generation of unique Legend of Zelda-style crypts and tombs.
